Parenting Tips from the Old Educator


Holiday Supplies
Holidays always seem to rush upon us. One day you're thinking about the upcoming holiday. The next day it has already passed. Keep this checklist handy and you will never be stuck without the proper holiday supplies.
PACKAGED AND PREPARED FOODS:
1 box prepared stuffing (in case of emergency)
1 large loaf of bread
2 to 3 cans chicken broth
1 can prepared cranberry sauce
Crackers
Lemon juice

MEAT:
14-16 lb. turkey

DAIRY:
1/2 to 1 gallon milk
1 to 2 pints heavy cream
12 oz. sour cream
1 lb. assorted cheeses
1 to 2 lbs. butter
Dozen eggs

HERBS AND SPICES:
Allspice
Cinnamon
Garlic
Nutmeg
Parsley
Pepper
Rosemary
Sage
Salt
Tarragon
Thyme

BAKING SUPPLIES:
All-purpose flour
Baking powder
Baking soda
Brown sugar
1 cup chestnuts
Cornstarch
Honey
1 pound pecans or walnuts
1 cup raisins
Sugar
Vanilla
2 to 3 packages yeast

PRODUCE:
3 to 4 pounds apples, preferably Granny Smith
12 to 16 oz. whole cranberries, fresh or frozen
2 to 3 lemons
2 to 3 oranges
1 to 3 pears
1 butternut squash
3 to 5 pound carrots
1 large bunch of celery
1 bunch leeks
1 to 2 heads of lettuce
1 pound mushrooms
1 to 1 1/2 pounds onions
4 to 6 pounds potatoes, russet or Yukon gold
2 cups pumpkin puree
Shallots
3 to 5 pounds sweet potatoes
BEVERAGES, OILS AND WINES:
Coffee
1 bottle sparkling cider
Olive oil
Canola oil
1 to 3 bottles red wine
1 to 3 bottles dry white wine
Vinegar
Ices

COOKWARE:
Casserole dish
Dutch oven
Large roaster (measure oven and turkey for proper size)
Roasting rack
2- to 3- quart sauce pan
4- or 6-qt. sauté pan
Steamer insert for stockpot
12-qt. stockpot

BAKEWARE:
Baking dish
2 baking sheets
Cooling rack
Flour sifter
Graduated measuring cups
Graduated measuring spoons
Nested mixing bowls
Oval baker
9- or 10-inch pie pan
1 1/2 pound loaf pan
Rolling pin
